What’s your dad like? Is he a gentle bear, or a moderately coiled spring? Does he belly laugh at your jokes, or flash a rare smile?
Well, why don’t we use The Humbug Gauge to get ideas for what to give dad for father’s day?
Humbug Gauge?
The action begins at Mr Humbug – traditional English sweets emporium. Recently, the good people of Mr Humbug shared the results of their in-house research which showed that certain daddy types preferred certain types of sweets. I’m calling this The Humbug Gauge
Very interesting.
Then I got thinking – okay, if father’s day gift inspiration is not knocking on your door yet, why not get a little help from The Gauge? Here goes …
The Humbug Gauge says - Most fathers who eat Liquorice are caring and well loved by the children
We say - If dad likes Liquorice, perhaps he’ll enjoy receiving a smart digital frame to display pictures of much loved children —> Digital Photo Frame
The Humbug Gauge says - Most fathers who eat Toffees are perfectionists who stop at nothing until the task at hand is complete.
We say – If dad likes Toffee, why not give him the puzzle frame. It might drive him berserk, but it will certainly engage him —> Puzzle Photo Frame
The Humbug Gauge says - Most fathers who eat nuts are thrill seekers and love to be constantly on the go.
We say – What! Did having kids not knock that out of him? (Just joking) If dad likes nuts, he will love this gorgeous TVR sports car that’s actually a computer mouse —> TVR Tuscan Mouse
The Humbug Gauge says - Most fathers who eat Boiled sweets enjoy the good life and are happy to sit back and watch as the world buzzes around them.
We say – These dads will love dipping into their paper, their magazines, their books, with zero effort, on a small, light, reader called The Kindle.
There again, you could just get dad some sweets!

In a recent interview - ‘When Hippies Become Grandpas’, Milligan who wrote ‘Grandpa Rules: Notes on Grandfatherhood, The World’s Best Job’
shared some of his wonderful thoughts on grand fatherhood with Otis Hart. Here are some gems from that interview:
Q: Where is the grandfather’s allegiance — to the grandchild or his own son or daughter?
A: I believe that loyalty is extremely important. I have known my children for years. I housed them. I fed them. I educated them. I loved them. I imparted important life lessons. And still, they think they know better. I’m goin’ with my grandkids.
Q: Grandfathers are getting hipper by the year. How do you think grandfathers will have changed by 2028?
A: I believe it’s unwise to use the words “grandfather” and “hip” in the same sentence unless an orthopedist is involved. Grandpas should not be “hip”; they should be as they have been for generations: lovable old guys in bad shorts who dispense money like an ATM on steroids.

There are very few books that make you laugh out loud at life as a grandfather.
This is one.
“Grandpa Rules” is written by Michael Milligan who wrote Good Times, Maude, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Dear John.
Milligan presents a funny yet sympathetic view on the paradoxes of still-young-at-heart grandfathers. Your father will see hilarious glimpses of himself. And he’ll thoroughly enjoy Mike Milligan’s brilliant comments on grand fatherhood.
